February 2006 - Industrial Symbiosis: synergies and sustainability for success - Nestlé UK

At previous ENVIBE Forums in Croydon, businesses and other organisations have discovered that improving resource efficiency is a vital way of saving money. But, collaboration with others can realise even greater benefits.

The National Industrial Symbiosis Programme (NISP) was launched at London Zoo in 2005 and since then has held a number of workshop events engaging business across the capital. Industrial Symbiosis facilitates resource related savings by finding and acting on linkages between very different organisations and industries – it translates the concept that one business’ waste, is another’s raw material into a reality.

In February 2006, Croydon’s ENVIBE programme provided the opportunity to discover more. Both ENVIBE and NISP are government funded and offered a free event to help businesses and organisations improve their environmental sustainability and work together to identify untapped synergies.

The event introduced the ENVIBE Challenge and the Croydon Commitment, a well established movement of businesses working to improve their engagement with the local community. Both continue the theme of working collaboratively, to improve business effectiveness while making a positive difference to the community and society.

The event also offered businesses the opportunity to sponsor the Green Guardian Awards, highlighting environment and green awareness in the boroughs of Kingston, Sutton, Merton, Wandsworth and Croydon.
